During the pandemic lock down I worked pro-bono on this pilot project developed to address the challenges of Covid-19 contact tracing. Below are some videos demonstrating Orion in it’s low to mid-fi state.
Workflows
Orion Overview
Problem statement: Proposed solutions involving GPS/Bluetooth apps may not fulfill requirements due to poor public uptake, security concerns, and low population coverage. Experts have indicated that human investigation is required, but classic methods are slow/inefficient.
Orion is a modern web-app that allows local health administrators higher throughput, easier management and greater oversight of their contact tracing efforts. Orion can radically improve the scalability and efficiency of contact tracing teams at local public health organizations.
Timeframe: 12 week sprint
Role: UX/UI designer - UX audit, interviews, branding, personas, and mockups
Team: 12 members - 2 UX/UI Designers, 5 Developers, 3 Entrepreneurs
Tools: Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, Google Suite, Trello, Slack
ORION SOLUTION
Rapid remote investigator onboarding to scale teams
Automatically manages investigator workflow to increase case throughput
Graph database allows rapid, flexible analysis and data sharing
Modern web architecture with responsive user-centric design for easy operation and seamless coordination
PAIN POINTS
Rapidly scaling contact tracing teams is slow and difficult
Lack of automated case management leads to poor utilization of human labor
Lack of modern data structures makes analysis slow and difficult
Outdated software interfaces slows team coordination and case throughput

As a new product, Orion is going to be introducing itself to every user who encounters it. With that in mind, I reviewed a number of sites to better understand how companies like Uber and Safer.me go through the process of explaining their service to users.
Areas that I focused on are:
Dashboard - Analytical and operational dashboards. Analytical provide an at a glance overview and operational provide data that helps users be quick, proactive and efficient
Onboarding - A learn by using approach or a choose your path approach?
Application Page - Form approach with several fields or a short form of basic info with a resume upload
Homepage - Clear call to action steering the user to the path they need, ie: Tracer or Patient
About - Persuasive content that explains how the site works that might otherwise clutter the homepage
1:1 Interviews
Master Plan/Roadmap
Orion’s web app provides automated workflow portals for key stakeholders, increasing work visibility, team scalability and reducing admin overhead
sitemap
Orion’s graph database representation then provides deeper analytical capabilities by surfacing key risk indicators that may be spread across multiple cases (eg, location, health condition)
Product and System Overview
Orion provides key stakeholders with features and processes via an automated case management engine. By combining existing HIE infrastructure with data-driven risk assessment and robotic workload balancing, case throughput can be optimized.

Conclusion
Our ask right now is really twofold:
The first, is that we need feedback from front-line champions, and make sure we are building the best possible tool from their uses.
Our plan is to iterate fast and ideally that will involve continuous feedback.
The second, is introductions to the managers and teams that may benefit from this tool.
Eventually if we find traction, we would be looking to partner with one of them as we develop towards our pilot.
